I was born with sickle cell anemia, a condition that brought unimaginable pain into my life from an early age. At twelve, I discovered a medication that offered instant relief but soon found myself dependent on it. Over the years, this struggle took a toll on my body and spirit. I lost the use of my hands and legs due to complications and faced setbacks that left me bedridden. Despite numerous attempts to recover, I faced relapses and challenges that seemed insurmountable.
Yet, through it all, I’ve learned the strength of resilience, the value of hope, and the importance of sharing our stories.

My Journey - Why I Created Junkies Like Me
I never thought my addiction would lead me here, to this moment, writing something I swore I’d take to the grave.
It was a rainy night, the kind where the world feels heavy and muted. I was coming back from a meeting. Not the kind of meeting you tell your family about, though—I was picking up from my dealer. Again. I told myself it would be the last time, but I’d said that a hundred times before.
I was jittery and distracted, the craving already curling in my stomach. I barely noticed the red light until I was halfway through the intersection. That’s when I saw the other car.
The impact was like a bomb. Metal crunching, glass exploding—it all happened in slow motion. When the world stopped spinning, I looked around in a daze. My car was wrecked, but I was alive. I glanced at the other car—a woman, slumped over the wheel. My stomach dropped.
I ran to her, my legs shaking like jelly. She was breathing, thank God, but unconscious. I could see the pills scattered across my seat from the crash, my secret laid bare. Panic surged.
What if the police came? What if they searched my car? My addiction would be exposed. My life would be over. So I ran.
I ran from her, from the scene, from the guilt clawing at my chest.
The news the next day said she survived, but barely. A hit-and-run, they called it. And I knew I was the coward who left her there. Every day since, I’ve wondered—if I hadn’t been so lost in my addiction, would this have happened? Would she have been hurt?
The guilt gnaws at me, but so does the fear. If I come forward now, will anyone believe it was an accident? Or will they see me for what I was that night—a selfish addict, too scared to face the consequences?
I want to do the right thing, but I don’t know if I’m strong enough. I don’t even know if I deserve forgiveness. All I know is that I can’t keep running forever.
Would you turn yourself in? Or would you keep running, like I have?
